A Lagos State Special Offences Court in Ikeja has sentenced a pastor of the Living Faith Church, aka Winners’ Chapel, Afolabi Samuel, to three years’ imprisonment for stealing $90,000 and N4.5m belonging to the registered trustees of the church. Samuel, an accountant and the church’s treasurer, was arraigned before Justice Mojisola Dada on two counts of conspiracy and stealing by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. According to the EFCC, the pastor and one Blessing Kolawole, an employee of the Covenant University, who is currently at large, conspired and dishonestly stole the money and converted the same to their personal uses. The anti-graft agency said Samuel, who was employed in the church’s accounting department to maintain proper records of funds, connived with Kolawole and others to take advantage of their position as the church’s treasurer and worker at the university, respectively. Most spoken about Boko Haram destroys electricity tower in Maiduguri, entire city thrown into blackout.

Good people of Maiduguri and environs have been thrown into lingering blackout following the destruction of one of the towers supplying electricity to the city from the national grid. NAN reports that the blackout, which has lasted for one week, has grounded many businesses that are relying on power. Those operating on generators are managing to render skeletal services. Some residents, who spoke to NAN, not only condemned the action of the insurgents but lamented the continued inability of the authorities concern to restore the power. “It’s now one week and most people don’t know why there is no electricity in Maiduguri. “We need to know what caused it and efforts by the power company to address the matter. “You can’t leave people in darkness without explanation,’’ a resident, Ibrahim Abubakar, said.
